Software Engineer - Web Applications

Help General Sentiment build the next-generation Social Intelligence Platform. As a Front-End Engineer, you will specialize in building responsive and elegant Web UIs with AJAX and similar technologies.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Work with existing UI developers, and build the next phase of General Sentiment products
  • Work closely with the rest of the engineering team to integrate and deploy new technologies and processes
  • Self-start side projects that contribute to General Sentiment's product offerings and growth
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Smart, great coder, motivated self-starter and quick learner
  • BS degree in Computer Science or related field (in lieu of degree, four years of relevant work experience)
  • Development experience in server-side technologies, such as Java and Python
  • JS/HTML/CSS experience and an interest in user interface design
  • Web application development experience, including knowledge of MVC or related frameworks
  • The ability to thrive in a startup environment
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Masters in Computer Science or related field
  • Significant experience developing user-facing software
  • Experience working on cross-browser platforms
  • Working knowledge of server-side frameworks like Struts2 and Hibernate
  • Object-oriented JavaScript skills
  • Working knowledge of UI libraries, such as jQuery and JavaScript MVC frameworks like Backbone.js
  • Updated knowledge of hosting, deploying, testing and monitoring applications and servers, including the latest tools on AWS

Software Engineer - Systems

General Sentiment is seeking a Software Engineer with the core responsibility of enhancing our production back-end, Hadoop-based system operating on Amazon EC2. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to play a crucial role for a fast-growing technology company in a new and emerging market. The individual must be extremely talented, motivated and eager to work with an inspired team.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Design, implement and maintain scalable and fault-tolerant back-end server systems
  • Work with the latest open source technologies, including Hadoop and Java
  • Self-start side projects that contribute to General Sentiment's product offerings and growth
  • Maintain and improve production operations, including Hadoop MapReduce jobs running on Amazon EC2
Background and Qualifications
  • Smart, great coder, motivated self-starter and quick learner
  • Proficiency in Java, Python, Perl or Bash programming in Unix/Linux environment
  • BS or MS in Computer Science or related discipline is required (Math, EE, etc.)
  • Previous experience with Hadoop and/or Amazon AWS is a plus (i.e., building Hadoop clusters, coding in Java with Hadoop, administering clusters in EC2, etc.)
  • The ability to thrive in a startup environment

Technical Analyst

This is a technical role for our financial market trading project.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Pull, process and analyze data from our internal system, outside sources or the Internet
  • Design and implement trading algorithms under guidance, which involves the coding, backtesting and optimizing of trading strategies
  • Assist team on trade discretion, trade execution and post-trade analysis
Background and Qualifications
  • Super smart, motivated self-starter and quick learner
  • Effective problem solving both independently and as member of a team
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, but also interested in Math, Statistics or Finance; proof of good academic record (such as GPA or other relevant test scores)
  • Knowledge of programming with Java, C++ or C#; familiar with common algorithms, data structures and object-oriented design
  • Knowledge of scripting languages, such as Perl and/or Python
  • Knowledge of basic statistics/probability; familiar with concepts such as correlation, standard deviation and common distributions
  • Basic knowledge of financial markets is a plus
